Why Most Diets Fail: How Emotional Eating and Food Addiction Keep You Stuck with Tricia Nelson #053

Summary

If you've ever wondered why willpower keeps failing you around food — why you can plan a beautiful, clean week and still end up elbow-deep in a bag of pretzels by Wednesday night — you're not broken, and you're definitely not alone. In this week's episode, I sat down with Tricia Nelson, an emotional eating expert and TEDx speaker who has been doing this work for more than thirty years. The conversation peeled back layer after layer of why so many of us struggle with food, and why most of the strategies we've been handed don't work.

Emotional Eating Is a Spectrum

Tricia's first big reframe: emotional eating isn't a yes/no thing. It's a spectrum. On one end is the casual eater who has a piece of chocolate after a hard day, gains five pounds on a cruise, and easily course-corrects when they get home. On the other end is the food addict — someone whose eating is genuinely out of control, who can't stop at one cookie no matter how badly they want to, and whose health is paying the price. Most of us live somewhere in between. Knowing where you sit on that spectrum changes everything about what to do next.

The Three Drivers Behind Every Bite

There are three things, Tricia says, that drive emotional eating: emotions, stress, and habit. The longer we've been using food to manage feelings, the more automatic it becomes — to the point where we don't even know we're doing it. We just know we keep ending up in the kitchen. And modern life keeps us so busy that we never sit with our feelings long enough to recognize them. By 10 p.m., when the world finally goes quiet, all those uncomfortable, unfelt emotions show up at the pantry door.

The PEP Test: A Tool to Understand Every Craving

If you take one thing from this episode, let it be this. PEP stands for Painkiller, Escape, and Punishment — the three reasons we reach for food. We use it to numb pain, to get a break from our own busy minds, and (counterintuitively) to punish ourselves. The next time you're staring into the fridge for the third time in an hour, ask: what am I actually looking for? It's a small question that interrupts a very old pattern.

Why Diets Don't Stick

Tricia argues that 98% of diets fail not because we lack discipline but because they only address the symptom. Lose the weight, and all the feelings you were burying with food rise back up — with no plan to deal with them. The newness of the diet wears off, the smaller jeans stop feeling thrilling, and the same old feelings drive you right back to the same old foods. Until we address the living problem — how we're moving through our days, how stretched thin we are, how disconnected we feel — the eating problem keeps coming back.

The Solution Is Simpler (and Harder) Than You Think

Slow down. Build a morning routine. Eat three real meals at the table without your phone. Stop snacking your way through the day. And — this is the part most of us resist — get support. Not because you're weak, but because food is the hardest of the addictions to navigate (you have to eat every day) and the personality patterns underneath it run deep. People-pleasing tops Tricia's list of 24 emotional-eater traits, and it's a perfect example: the more you over-give, the more resentful you get, and the more you feel entitled to that I-deserve-it binge.

The Bottom Line

This isn't about finding the right macros or the next miracle drug. It's about getting honest about why you're eating, what you're actually hungry for, and how you want to live. Your body isn't broken — it's just been ignored. And the way out isn't another diet. It's a different relationship with yourself.
