Your Makeup Bag Might Be Making Menopause Worse — with Melanie Petschke #049

Summary

If you've ever stood in the beauty aisle completely overwhelmed — wondering whether 'clean at Sephora' actually means anything — this episode is going to help you cut through the noise.

Melanie Petschke is the co-founder of Crunchi, a clean cosmetics brand she built specifically because she couldn't find products that met her own safety standards. She's also a board-certified family nurse practitioner with over a decade of research into environmental toxin exposure. And what she discovered about the U.S. cosmetics industry? It's not pretty.

Here's what most people don't know: the FDA does not require pre-market safety approval for cosmetic ingredients. Unlike most other countries, products in the U.S. are essentially innocent until proven guilty — which means thousands of potentially harmful ingredients are showing up in everything from your foundation to your SPF moisturizer, completely legally.

The ingredient category Melanie flagged first is fragrance. It sounds simple, but the word 'fragrance' on a label can represent thousands of individual chemical compounds — many of them phthalates, which are well-established hormone disruptors. And here's the part that surprised me: 'unscented' doesn't mean fragrance-free. Companies can use masking agents that neutralize a scent while still loading a product with fragrance chemicals. It's the opposite of what you'd expect.

Other heavy hitters to watch for: formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, ethoxylated compounds (look for 'PEG' followed by a number), talc (potentially contaminated with asbestos), and chemical sunscreen actives like oxybenzone and avobenzone, which can trigger low-grade inflammation and may actually accelerate aging at the cellular level.

For women in perimenopause and menopause, the stakes are especially high. When your estrogen and progesterone are already in flux, layering on chemical compounds that mimic estrogen, block hormone receptors, and disrupt hormone production is — as Melanie puts it — like pouring gasoline on a fire. Hot flashes, brain fog, mood swings, sleep disruption, stubborn weight gain: all of these can be amplified by the chemical load building up in your daily routine.

The concept that really stuck with me is 'body burden.' The average woman uses about 12 personal care products a day, which translates to roughly 150 individual chemical exposures before lunch. Layer in food packaging, non-stick cookware, fragranced laundry products, and tap water — and that accumulation adds up faster than most of us realize.

The good news: Melanie isn't here to make you throw everything out. Her practical advice is to start by eliminating fragrance-containing products, look for the EWG Verified badge (currently the most rigorous certification available in the cosmetics space), and replace items one at a time as they run out. Small, consistent swaps can meaningfully reduce your toxic load over time — and the women who make these changes often report unexpected improvements: clearer skin, better sleep, and yes, fewer hormonal symptoms.

Your body wasn't broken. It was just carrying more than you knew.
