Reduce your toxic load from personal care products and save some money? Yes please!!
After beginning the slow process of overhauling my food, cosmetics, and personal care products over the years I have been on a mission to accomplish two goals; reduce my exposure to toxic chemicals and try and not go broke doing it!
This copycat version of Burt's Bees lip balm does just that. My DIY peppermint lip balm recipe contains ZERO toxins, is less expensive than store-bought ones, and...honestly, I prefer it!

You can pack a lot of healing power in these little tubes with only 4 ingredients. This copycat version of Burt's Bees lip balm also leaves out the less desirable ingredients like rancid industrial seed oils.
Beeswax - One of the best bases for lip balm because it keeps it hard and smooth, and not melting in your purse. Also, beeswax is naturally antibacterial and a great natural skin protector by providing a light barrier to keep skin moisturized.
Coconut Oil - Also naturally antibacterial and anti-fungal, coconut oil can help preserve the lip balm while also providing nourishment to the skin with all the great healthy fats. When put to the lips, coconut oil melts slightly making this firm, yet soft oil perfect for lip balms.
Vitamin E - Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant for the skin and also helps preserve the lip balm longer. It's not necessary but is a nice additive. You don't need to go out and buy special vitamin E for DIY skin care products, you can just poke a hole in a capsule. Using capsules also helps keep the vitamin E from going rancid on your shelf.
Peppermint Essential Oil - Peppermint essential oil is great for more than just as a nice smelling lip balm! What I absolutely love about this recipe is that you can apply the healing lip balm just about anywhere on your body. If you have dry cuticles or chapped hands, simply rub all over and massage into the skin for immediate relief.
With this copycat Burt's Bees lip balm in your purse, you are also toting around a little bit of aromatherapy wherever you go. When you need a boost of energy just take a deep inhalation of the peppermint essential oils in the lip balm. If you need to ease a tension headache, rub a little bit on your temples, or for some seasonal allergy relief rub a little bit on your chest or neck.
I figured out that by making my own copycat version of Burt's Bees Lip Balm we were saving around $2-2.50 per tube.
Burt's Bees Lip Balm costs about $2.50-2.99/tube in the stores. I calculated that even with using my high-quality doTerra peppermint essential oil, organic beeswax, organic coconut oil, and high-quality vitamin E capsules it was only costing me about $0.43 to make each tube. I could even lower that cost by purchasing even larger quantities in bulk.
Have I convinced you to make it yet? Let me show you how easy it is!
So, gather your supplies first...
Glass Pyrex Measuring Cup with a spout - 1-2 cup size is perfect for this recipe
Lip Balm Tubes - I like these food grade, BPA-free ones. Or you can use the kind that you apply lip balm with your finger with containers like these. You need about 8-9 for this recipe.
Microwave
Glass pipette - totally optional (some people really like using this but I don't - it's too hard to clean and I have a steady enough hand when pouring)
2 tsp organic beeswax
1 Tbsp organic coconut oil (I use Kirkland)
10 drops peppermint essential oil (I use doTerra peppermint essential oil)
1 vitamin E capsules (optional)
*These quantities make about 4-5 lip balm tubes or small containers (0.15oz/5 gram).
Add the beeswax and coconut oil to the glass Pyrex measuring cup and melt in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring or swirling after each 30 second round until completely melted. This took me about 2-3 rounds of 30 seconds in our microwave.
Once the beeswax and coconut oil is melted, prick a hole or cut off the end of the vitamin E capsules and add to the melted ingredients.
Add the peppermint essential oil and swirl or stir to combine.
Carefully pour the melted solution into yourLip Balm Tubes or containers. This must be done fairly quickly as the solution begins to firm up pretty quickly!
Let the lip balm sit on the counter for a couple of hours until completely firm before adding the caps. You can speed this up by putting them in the fridge.
Add some cute labels if you want (washi tape works really well for this!) and start using your lip balm!
Woohoo! You just made your very own copycat version of Burt's Bees lip balm!
You can always make your lip balm firmer by adding more beeswax or softer by adding more coconut oil.
Any other essential oil or essential oil blend could be substituted for peppermint. I've tried lavender, lemon, lavender + lemon, and more!
I hope you enjoy my copycat DIY Burt's Bees lip balm. What are some of your other favorite DIY lip balm or DIY natural beauty products that you have made?

I am so much more conscious of what I am putting into my body and I actually feel really empowered and good about myself by saying no to the foods that are not good for me. At Dinner the other night, my husband and kids kept asking me to try one french fry or one bite of their dessert, and I just smiled and said 'no thank you'.
With 20+ post partum pounds, I was looking for a program to help me. I was blown away working with Leah. I lost 9 pounds, felt less tired and formed healthy habits that are now j7st part of my new normal.
