20 Super Healthy Smoothie Recipes You Need to Try

November 12, 20248 min read

Smoothie recipes are a dime a dozen on the internet. “Detox” and “cleansing” are buzzwords that just about every blogger in the health and wellness niche uses, and not always with your best interests in mind.

“This green smoothie will help you lose 10 pounds in one week”...but all that smoothie is doing causing weight loss due to dehydration.

“Detox your body with this incredible smoothie”... and are all those supplements in that smoothie safe?? hmmmm...

“5 Healthy Smoothies to keep you fit, trim and energized”... but then you see the ingredients list and those smoothies are all loaded with tons of sugar! Yeah, it’s from fruit, but it’s still sugar.

It’s no wonder people are confused about what a “healthy” smoothie really looks like! I felt the same way, which is why I searched the internet, investigated hundreds (maybe thousands) of smoothie recipes and brought you what I think are the top 20 healthy smoothie recipes out there.

How I Picked the “Winners”

When I consider a smoothie “healthy” it must:”

  • Have no added sugar (except possible very small amounts of raw honey)

  • Have low amounts of fruit (1-1.5 cups maximum per serving)

  • Contain some amount of greens or vegetables (not only fruit)

  • Taste good!

So here they are….

The Top 20 Healthy Smoothie Recipes

Let’s break my favorites down into what I consider the 4 main categories of healthy smoothies; Green & Clean, Choco-holic, Sumpin’ Sweet, and Nutty & Creamy. All you need to decide is what type of mood you are in, click on the link in the smoothie title and whip up a new smoothie to try! You can rest assured, these recipes all passed the “is it healthy?” test for me!

Green & Clean Smoothies

Coconut Apple Green Smoothie Recipe

This recipe checks all the boxes and has a unique flavor that you don’t often find. Feel free to substitute collagen powder for the plant-based protein to make this smoothie skin, joint, and gut supportive.

Morning Energy Green Smoothie Recipe

Yes, another recipe from DavyandTracy.com (I love their recipes!) This recipe is also unique in that it has both a “green and clean” taste as well as containing raw cacao. I think it falls more into the former category so I listed it here. You could leave the cacao out if you are a diehard gre smoothie fan, but cacao does give you a slight energy boost. As with the previous smoothie, you can substitute collagen powder for the plant-based protein to make your smoothie more skin, joint, and gut supportive.

My everyday green smoothie with 5 servings of veggies and fruit

I created this smoothie myself because I was having a difficult time finding a smoothie that was packed with greens, had limited fruit AND tasted good. Well, this one works for me everyday. I hope you like it too!

Glowing Green Smoothie

Be aware, this smoothie recipe yields almost 8 cups of smoothie! However, you may find yourself sipping it all gone it tastes so light and refreshing. Get ready to glow!

How to Make Mango, Mint & Spinach Taste Amazing Together

Just like the title says, the combo of mango, mint and spinach in this smoothie tastes amazing. I created this one as a way to get spinach into my kids...and it works so well they ask for extra!

Paleo Green Smoothie with Protein {No Added Sugar, Vegan Option}

In an amazing feat, this smoothie combines leafy greens and zucchini into a green smoothie without compromising great taste. Also unbelievable, there is NO banana! PaleoRunningMomma uses medjool dates to sweeten this glorious green smoothie.

Apple Ginger Green Smoothie

So simple, this smoothie is low in sugar and good for digestion. You may be surprised how much you like ginger in a smoothie.

Honorable Mention:

Beet, Strawberry, Cranberry Smoothie

Even though there are no greens in this smoothie recipe, it has a decent serving of veggies in the form of beets. Yes, now you can drink your beets. Who would have thought?!?!

Choco-holic Smoothies
Chocoholic smoothie

So, apparently, there are very few chocolate flavored smoothie recipes that contain greens! I’m not sure why this is...it is so easy to “hide” the taste of greens behind the chocolate and pack an extra nutritional punch into a smoothie. I only found a few:

Healthy Dark Chocolate Green Smoothie Recipe

This smoothie packs a whopping 3 cups of spinach in it while still satisfying your chocolate cravings! #nutritiousanddelicious

No Fail Chocolate Kale Smoothie (for kids AND adults!)

I may be a bit biased with this one (created by yours truly) but it is simple, easy, checks all the boxes to be considered healthy AND IT’S DELICIOUS! Seriously, kids love it too.

Mint Chocolate Green Smoothie

Hallelujah! Now you mint chocolate chip ice cream fans have a healthy alternative! I know, I know, it’s not exactly the same, but it can be a healthy stand-in most of the time.

Honorable Mentions:

Here is a list of “honorable mentions” that I feel could be extra healthy and still taste delicious if you were to simply add 1 cup of spinach or kale:

Chocolate!! Avocado Paleo Smoothie Recipe

A simple, yet delicious way to get healthy fats into your diet. Kids love this one too! (add 1 cup spinach)

Chocolate Banana Wonderland Breakfast Smoothie

This smoothie is pretty well balanced (especially if you add 1 cup spinach or kale) with a good dose of healthy fats, protein, and even some superfoods. Works well as a breakfast smoothie or as a snack any other time of the day.

Sumpin’ Sweet Smoothies

Blueberry Acai Green Smoothie with Collagen (Dairy-Free)

Honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing about this smoothie. It’s perfect just as is! Bonus - it’s dairy free if you are looking for a satisfying smoothie without using yogurt to make it creamy.

Vegan Strawberry Shortcake Smoothie

Yup, you can see I’m also a big fan of RootandRevel.com and this is the second smoothie recipe from their blog that I’m highlighting. (They have great recipes!!) I don’t see how anyone could possibly not like this smoothie. If you are trying to be on a low-sugar diet try using half of a banana instead of a whole banana to cut down on the natural sugars.

Coconut Goji Berry Smoothie

You get the best of both worlds with this smoothie; nutrition and taste. Sure to satisfy your sweet craving while also keeping you energized and powered with nutrients all day long.

Nutty & Creamy Smoothies
Nutty and Creamy smoothie

Tastes-Like-Ice-Cream Kale

One of her most popular recipes, The Blender Girl delivers another exceptionally delicious and powerfully healthy smoothie. In her words, this smoothie is “The Holy Grail of Kale”!

Creamy Quinoa, Kale and Almond Milk Smoothie

For those that are avoiding sugar (even from fruit) and dairy, this is the smoothie for you. Incorporating quinoa gives you some protein and fiber. Add the kale and you are set for a healthy smoothie.

Nutty Green Smoothie

This is a great basic recipe to start with if you want a green smoothie that has some protein and a nice creamy taste from nut butters. (You can substitute any nut butter in this recipe.)

Nutty Fig Green Smoothie

Another variation of a basic green smoothie incorporating healthy nuts. This version uses figs and bananas to sweeten it up but also adds some yogurt for a bit of extra protein and creaminess.

General Substitutions/Modifications I Would Make

It might happen to you too...someday you may call yourself a smoothie connoisseur like I do. When you have tried and tested hundreds of smoothie recipes as I have, I think you have earned that right! Even so, you may find that early on in your smoothie experimenting you start to discover that you like certain consistencies, temperatures, and tastes for your smoothies.

Here is how you can make simple substitutions and/or modifications to ANY smoothie recipe so that the smoothie is just how you want it!

To make it thinner: add more liquid.

To make it thicker: Either use less liquid or add some ingredients to beef it up like coconut meat, avocado, ground flax seeds or chia seeds, oatmeal, nut butter or even protein powders. You can also use ice cubes or frozen instead of fresh fruits and veggies.

To sweeten it: add some banana, raw honey, dates, or an extra dash of some of the fruits containing higher amounts of sugar.

To make it more of a meal: add some Vital Proteins collagen peptides* (buy on Amazon). Collagen is a type of protein that is great for supporting younger looking skin and gut health! *Vital Proteins offers a better price than Amazon when you set up a subscription!

Alrighty then. Now you are all set for months trying out new smoothie recipes.

Like I said before, you can rest assured that these are some of the most healthy smoothie recipes out there. Trust me, I am so picky! I don’t want to sip down a large glass of mostly sugar and no redeeming health qualities. Gotta make the calories count! These smoothies recipes all win mega points for nutrition.
